Traveling is an adventure, filled with highs, lows, and everything in between. As someone who’s experienced the beauty and the chaos that comes with exploring new places, I’ve learned that not every trip is a dream, and some destinations leave a lasting impression for reasons both good and bad. Here’s a glimpse into my travel experiences and a few lessons I’ve picked up along the way.
Dubai: A Destination I Never Get Tired Of
There’s something about Dubai that keeps pulling me back. The city is a perfect blend of luxury, culture, and modernity, offering new experiences every time I’ve visited till they ban Nigerians from entering their country. Whether it’s shopping in world-class malls, dining at exquisite restaurants, or simply feeling safe with your belongings, Dubai never fails to impress. It’s a place I truly miss, and I know I’ll never get tired of returning.
Johannesburg: Not Quite My Cup of Tea
On the flip side, not every destination is one you’ll fall in love with. My trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, left me feeling underwhelmed. Despite its rich history and vibrant culture, the city didn’t resonate with me in the way I had hoped. It’s one of those places that I’m not eager to revisit, as it simply didn’t leave a lasting positive impression because I felt so unsafe.
Milan: A Trip Marred by Misfortune
Then some trips stand out for all the wrong reasons. During my visit to Milan, I experienced one of the most stressful travel situations—a robbery. Losing both my money and passport was a nightmare that turned what should have been an enjoyable trip into a disaster. It was a harsh reminder that even in the most stylish and celebrated cities, there are talented pickpocketers and you can never be too cautious. Though, I will still visit Milan any day, any time but will be more careful.
Travelling Solo: The Golden Rule
As someone who travels solo frequently, I’ve developed a few rules to ensure my safety and enjoyment. The most important of these is to avoid alcohol entirely when you’re on your own. No matter how tempting it might be to pair that sumptuous stake or dinner with a glass of wine, don’t do it! it’s crucial to stay in good hotels or apartments for security reasons also and to stay alert always and in control, especially when navigating unfamiliar environments. Staying sober is a key part of staying safe, never forget that.
Making Layovers Bearable: First or Business Class is the Way to Go.
Layovers are often dreaded, but I’ve found that the best way to make them bearable or even enjoyable is to fly first class or business class. With access to premium lounges, better seating, showers, sleeping areas, and priority boarding, the experience is much more comfortable. If you can’t swing it, you can pay for a premium lounge with your economy ticket at the airport or at the point of purchasing your ticket online, but some lounges can only admit you if the lounge is not full. Layovers can feel like endless waiting when you are not comfortable, making them one of the least enjoyable aspects of travel.
The Unseen Side of Travel: Instagram vs. Reality
Travel is often romanticized on social media, but the reality can be quite different. For every stunning view, there’s a tourist trap, pick pocketers, an overrated hotel, or a disappointing meal waiting to greet you. Add to that the frustrations of lost luggage (Make sure to get Travel insurance with Heirs Insurance) cancelled flights, and long queues at tourist attractions, and it becomes clear that travel isn’t always as glamorous as it seems. These are the things the filters and captions don’t show us.
Travelling within Africa is harder due to limited direct flight routes, high travel costs, visa complexities, and inconsistent infrastructure across the continent.
Even with a blank cheque, I’d avoid visiting any place with political instability, severe safety concerns, or a reputation for exploiting tourists.
Behind the scenes, travelling to unique destinations often involves extensive planning, unexpected logistical challenges, and sometimes navigating local customs and regulations that aren’t always tourist friendly.
Tricks for navigating ‘Immigration’ home and abroad?
My trick for navigating immigration is to stay calm, have all documents ready, and always be polite and patient with the officers.
Embassy/Visa woes
Embassy and visa processes are a true test of patience, leaving me with new stories each time, some amusing, others just frustrating.
One of my toughest and saddest experiences was applying for a UK visa. The paperwork was endless: bank statements, proof of accommodation, flight bookings etc, everything meticulously submitted. Yet I was asked for even more documents, turning it into a never-ending scavenger hunt.
Then there’s the agonizing waiting game. I recall a time when my passport was still at the embassy a week before my intended travel date, I had made plans with friends for that vacation and everyone was waiting and hoping. Every day felt like a countdown to disaster, and when the passport finally arrived just two days before my planned departure, there was no visa (Sad).
At another embassy, the process seemed more about connections than paperwork. While some breezed through, the rest were stuck in long queues with indifferent staff.
Despite these hurdles, every successful visa reminds me the struggle is worth it. The adventure that awaits always makes it all worthwhile, but I can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief each time the ordeal is over.
