Have you ever wondered about the heights our parents went through all ‘in the name of love’ versus what we are currently seeing?
Well, wonder no more! I have done all the hard work for you.
I have asked Gen Xs (44 – 69 years), Millennials (28 – 43 years) and Gen Zs (12 – 27 years) across the group two questions to determine who loves more ‘intensely’ 😏.
PS: You’ll know why they wanted to remain anonymous when you start reading.
Question 1
What is the ‘craziest’ thing you have done ‘in the name of love’?
I conspired with my husband to get pregnant, so that my parents would allow me to get married to him. As they said I was too young, and it worked!

Driving from Chevron to Ikotun Egbe (and back) at almost midnight. An okada guy had to lead me back out from Ikotun Egbe to Osolo Way because it was my first time out there. I had dropped Adebimpe off at her dad’s house and we didn’t have Google Maps at the time – 2003! Of course, that was the last time I saw her live! Thanks to technology and more ‘practical’ options.

Got married without my parents’ blessing. Well, I had found someone I had fallen for, but my mom had a different idea. She brought another man for me to marry. One she approved of, but I barely knew. She is my mom, so I tried with this guy, but it just didn’t work. That was when I defied my parents. I told my parents, and my dad took it way better than my mom did. I just couldn’t let go of who I had fallen for. He was my best friend, my confidant and there was just no one like him. As sweet as all this was, my mom wasn’t having it, so she stopped talking to me. Long story short, by the time my first child (I was already married btw) was placed in her hands, she completely melted. So now, we are best of friends.

I cooked a lot for someone who didn’t really like food. His friends and brother loved what I cooked and always looked forward to it, but the person I was truly doing all that cooking for never for one day showed any interest or appreciated it. So, one faithful day as usual after dishing out the food, he only ate a little off his plate and that was it. When I complained, his response was that he didn’t understand why I cooked when he never asked me to. (🤦🏽♀️ I don suffer😁) After that, I decided not to cook for any guy again unless…

There was this guy I really liked, in class, one new girl, Enitan just resumed school in a different class and started sticking to him like glue. My class changed, and he and Enitan ended up as seat partners. Imagine that! One day, I was playing with him and the tomboy in me jumped out and he got hurt. I apologized and we got over it. Days later, I asked him for an extra pencil, and he said he didn’t have one. Right in my presence he gave Enitan one. Men will disgrace you. My female friends gingered me to take action. After school, we went to her house and challenged her to come out if it’s sure for her. We knew her parents wouldn’t be home. Last, last she didn’t come out. Never again, I’m even feeling secondhand shame thinking about it.

Omo, I’m not really the super lover kind of guy it’s mostly been the other way around for me as I usually get those crazy treatments. But off the top of my head, I’d say at one point when ‘Missus’ had an early morning shift, I woke up and prepared breakfast (Indomie and fried eggs), and in the evening surprised her with chicken and chips. Let’s just say she was elated. Lol.

On that faithful day, I went looking for one lady. Let’s just say olopa ko everybody. Apparently, there had been a robbery recently and we had been seen parading the area one too many times. So I was taken to the compound to state who I was always looking for. I ended up putting her in trouble because her mum felt I had already seen her in church, what was I still looking for near their premises?

Get married. I was never one for marriage. I did not believe in a need for marriage. Find your person., love up, a baby along the way and happily ever after, really? But along the line, partly because I am BIG on PDA, my father saw his picture. He asked who he was and what my plan was, and I told him that he was mine and there was no plan. Somehow, my dad got his number, called him and informed him that if he was serious, he would do the needful. And true to form, this guy started planning for this. It took the convincing of everyone except me to realise he was not going to let go. In the end, I did the wildest thing I ever did and got married to my best friend.

In the beautiful tapestry of fate, my journey began with an official trip, which I originally declined. Little did I know that destiny had woven a romance chapter into the monotonous fabric of work responsibilities. On this trip, I met my life partner, and the ordinary assignment became the amazing background for our love story. It’s funny how a reluctant step led me straight into the arms of the person who would become the love of my life.

It’s funny how we have different versions of this story. I saw him for the first time in church. I hadn’t attended a physical service in a while, and I randomly had a lead to go on that particular day. After service, on my way home, I saw him and we locked eyes as my cab drove off. Later that evening, I made a tweet about the service, and he immediately liked it and I realised he was the same person I saw in church, so I slid into his DM and no day has gone by without us speaking ever since.
