Happy ‘Movember’ everyone.
In this edition, I’ll be talking about a few things we can do to stay healthy as men. Taking charge of your own health is important at any age and if you haven’t been intentional about it before, it’s never too late to start developing healthier habits.
The following checklist provides a foundation from which to begin.
1. Have regular check-ups, even if you’re ‘fine’
One of the best ways that men can promote their own good health is to have a wellness check each year – regardless of age or health concerns. You won’t get a ‘hard guy’ award for avoiding the hospital so keep tabs on your wellbeing.
2. See your doctor if something doesn’t seem right
Beyond regular check-ups. it’s also important to see a doctor if you have noticed changes in your mood, sleep, bathroom habits, have a cut that doesn’t seem to heal, or if you’re experiencing unexplained weight fluctuations or sexual dysfunction.
3. Know your family health history
If your dad or other family members have a history of chronic health conditions, you may be at higher risk for developing them too. Your doctor can help you develop an action plan to minimise risks and increase your chances of early detection.
4. Check ‘upstairs’
As I mentioned earlier, we don’t do ‘hard guy ting’ here. Mental health is important. Are you suddenly irritable or drinking too much? Are you paying attention to signs of stress, burnout, or depression? If you notice anything is ‘off’, it’s time to get help.
5. Care for your prostate
Your prostate grows as you get older and it almost certainly shows symptoms, like urinary problems. A healthy, low-fat diet can reduce the likelihood of prostate growth and may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
6. Vary your workouts
Your body gets very comfortable when you always do the same workout, so you must keep varying your exercises. Employ an age-appropriate mix of aerobics, muscle training, and stretching.
7. Take breaks
I know the dollar is rising and money must be made but rest is a requirement, not a reward. Taking time to chill (Reading, listening to an audiobook or podcast, or watching TV with your family and friends aren’t just fun ideas; they’re best practices that help you keep stress at bay.
Is there more you can do? Of course, but with these tips, you have a core reference point for living a healthier fuller life.
