I have had many women who have inspired me, but someone that has had a major impact on me is my mum (Mrs Yusuf). She was a super smart, hardworking and strong-willed woman who raised me to understand that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to do.
My mum was widowed at an early stage of her life and took it upon herself to fend for my sister and I, ensuring we finished our education without the help of anyone. This part of her life really influenced me as a youngster. Her belief in women and girls being able to take on any challenge without fear was worthy of admiration.
My mum who was also a teacher at the time, always said to me “You are in control of your life, you define what being successful means, whether that is being a mother, a wife, or a husband. You define who you become.” She further taught me that the most wonderful moment in a woman’s life is when she realizes she can achieve whatever she wants to achieve if she sets her mind to it and works diligently.
Remarrying was difficult for my mom due to the cultural stereotypes and stigma against widows, but she projected strength and resilience and didn’t allow anyone or anything to weigh her down. I have learnt that you don’t need to be afraid of being a leader. As a woman, you are no different from any other gender. This has helped sharpen my mind.
