At some point in every adult’s life, we get to leave our homes and comfort zones in search of greener pastures. Sometimes, that involves relocating to a completely different city or even country.
In my story, this was me, moving from Ibadan Electricity Company to Transcorp Hotels Plc. As we like to say, the largest hospitality company listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Old Bodija to Maitama didn’t sound too bad.
When I got the job as a Finance Officer in Abuja I was excited and daydreamed about all the prospects of my new career in the big city. “My ambassador, distinguished” adorned the ears of every wall at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja as I walked in but on arrival at the office, reality hit. I could hear the beat of every heart, focused eyes, typing fingers. “What is going on here,” I asked myself?
I was the new girl, I was overwhelmed. First, with adjusting to the new environment, I had to quickly memorise street names and directions, get accommodation, and majorly settle into the new job mentally and socially. At a point, I was drowning, gasping for breath and hoping that help would come from somewhere, from anywhere. I wasn’t really looking for someone to save me; I knew I would be fine, but I needed someone to hold my hands; that would be soothing enough and very reassuring.
Everything happened so fast and it felt like I had been hard-pressed on all sides for so long, but it was just a few weeks. Gladly, my rays of sunshine came in the form of Sandra and Jane.
Sandra is a co-worker who has been a blessing since the day we crossed paths. She made it her responsibility to show me the ropes and even assist with my workload without making me feel like a burden, despite her busy schedule.
Then came Jane we instantly bonded. She has been my mental support and a really kind, listening and supportive friend. I guess I can call her my bestie!
What I love about Sandra and Jane is that just like everybody else, they are willing to help you find your feet, however, they are the silent custodians of everything Transcorp Hotels Plc, especially the food. Every day is a feast as I’ve learnt to put in my best work, learn, improve and feed my soul to the fullest- Chargrilled prawns with Basmati Rice and Pineapple juice, please.
Every day is another amazing day spent with these wonderful ladies and the THP team. Well, now that I am here that’s one item off my goals for the year. Next up is to achieve a commendation for a worthy performance, get my own place, grow my career, and hopefully get my own car by the end of 2021.
Thanks to these two heaven-sent ladies, I no longer feel like the new kid on the block, and I’m on the right track to smashing my goals for this year.
