Lately, 2020 has very much felt like one unending zoom meeting. This thought inspired me to create a depiction of how I think the reaction of each month would be if we randomly took a screenshot of all our moods and feelings. If our birth month represented us, I would get “Lady Maskabut,” because this is what I imagine if a superhero came from Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic—the name gotten from the common sight of wearing a mask but not really wearing a mask in the bustling city of Lagos.
One thing I know about 2020 is that it will never go down as that boring year whose last digits you try really hard to remember as you fill in a form–and come to think of it, the concept of referring to years by the last two digits seems like a foreign concept now.
A lot has happened in 2020. So as this year (finally!) ends, I’ve decided against essays and long-winded words because one, you already know how the story goes and two, like me, you are probably either grateful it’s over, or thankful you survived with your wits about you.
In these screenshots of the 2020 months on a zoom call, of course, March and April have more than one screen because they joined with their phones, laptops, iPad and microwave oven. I doubt any of the 20s years will go back to the mundane, and I’m here for (some of) it because not everyone gets jarred out of the mundane in their lifetime. Here’s to a delightful, eventful 2021.
