She promised me peace and unity
I was assured all hopes of calm and tranquillity
A nation bound in freedom
With resources abundant to choose from
Through threescores her history unfold
Her journey through life, though most untold
Handed down from the colonial masters
To national leaders, few better than all others
Yet, after a score, decade and half a dozen years
Still the burdens of this country she bears
What hope do we have to give
The future generations who have to live
With no opportunity for basic education
Nor for their health, proper medication
No justice for the oppressed
But loud silence from the government buttressed
The time has come, we bond together
Young or old, it really doesn’t matter
Using your gift, resources or talent to utter
Calling out inadequacies and bring to order
The betrayal of our leaders high and low
The audacity of hope is all we know
Beyond the hopes of moral or religious sanctimony
To build a nation proudly free of acrimony
Oh Nigeria, you will arise … You must!
