If you are reading this, there’s a high chance you are on Instagram, and an even higher chance that you are a compulsive scroller, following brands and people you find interesting (Maybe even compulsively). Don’t worry, I’m not judging. When it comes to the morbid fascination this generation has with social media, we are all guilty. Some of us more liable than others, especially when it comes to pictorial content.
So, the next time you find yourself drawn to Instagram post, or a billboard, digital display or games and apps, ask yourself: What is it about this image that I find so compelling? Then, when you have found the answer, ask yourself this: What is it about my own pictures that others will find compelling.

Knowing your audience allows you to pick the design elements to focus on. Audiences are not one size fits all, Learn the basics and understand what message your images are sending. Therefore, you must align your content for different channel whilst still keeping the brand guidelines and values in mind.
- Focus on your subject
When it comes to imagery, it is vital that your subject is in focus and easily identified, not distracting and well framed.
- Clarity/Lighting
Quality imagery will build trust with your audience, especially online your audience needs to see who they’re doing business with or what products they are buying as clearly as possible.
- Keep it Real
It may sound absurd to mention but using ‘real people’ is far better than overdoing the stock image.
- Tell a Compelling Story
The greatest brands on earth know how to use their brand values, they’re more than words and they need to be present in your visual content too.
