Dear Colleagues,
As we head further into the second half of the year, we are pleased to share with you our security tips for the period. We welcome your feedback, questions and comments.
Situational Assessment
In just over a month from now, starting in September, we would be in the “ember” months. Typically, there is often an upsurge in criminal activities during this period. This thus requires that we take deliberate and proactive steps to increase our vigilance as well as preventive and protective security measures.
Here are a few things you should look out for:
- Possible increase in cases of robberies, kidnapping and other violent acts etc.
- Perpetrators sometimes disguised in uniforms of security officials or pretending to be commercial bus drivers, who pick unsuspecting commuters at bus-stops.
- Online hacking/phishing and identity theft.
What We Can Do to Protect Ourselves, Families and Businesses.
- Always inform family or friends if you are going out or travelling.
- Give itinerary/ locations you will visit and ensure your phone battery is properly charged.
- Avoid conversations with strangers on the streets or in cabs, particularly those on politics, religion and ethnic rivalries.
- Be aware of your surroundings and be street smart. If you plan to visit where you never been before, carry out a route reconnaissance with Google Map.
- Be patient to look closely inside a bus or taxi before you board. If you suspect anything untoward, including the passengers, do not board. Consider carrying personal protection like pepper spray, etc. (Can be purchased from most security equipment shops nationwide).
- When/if you encounter the police, stay calm and polite and introduce yourself as a professional. Have a formal ID card on you at all times. Hold session on and educate your family on security precautions. Stay tuned to the news.
- Follow security trends in the news Have the contact phone numbers of the DPO/DCO of the nearest Police station in your area and that of your Office Security Team lead on speed dial.
- Don’t fall prey to fast business deals or “too good to be true” propositions whether from friends or strangers.
- Support and effectively monitor office security personnel. Report truancy and performance gaps immediately.
- Front Desk officers must be very vigilant always and must respectfully but carefully assess walk-in customers.
