Oh, how I have missed you my HH people!!!
Now that I’m back, I come with a few changes. First, instead of my usual write ups about food and eating habits, I decided to do something different. So, in this edition, we’ll be talking about walking.
Let me start from the past. Before I got into the university, I stayed home with my mum for a year and she made me go on VERY long walks with her round VGC every morning. I hated it! And I thought my mum hated me too. I said ‘mummy this is more for adults and not for me’ but she kept saying I would thank her later.
Fast-forward to my life as a young professional. I am literally as lazy as the guy that designed the Japanese flag and I find myself wishing had more opportunities to walk.
I appreciate that my mother made me take those walks because even back then, I could see the benefits. I was much more flexible, stronger, faster and my bikini body was on a 100. Lol.
So, what am I saying? We need to take more walks! We need to get up, move around and avoid the sedentary life. Let’s think about it. Walking is ridiculously simple with powerful and scientifically proven benefits.
Just in case you are not yet motivated, I have listed a few benefits to help you get moving.
Heart- 30 to 60 mins of walking most days of the week can drastically lower the risk of heart disease.
Bones- walking 4 hours a week can reduce the risk of hip fractures by up to 45%
Brain- Just 2 hours of walking a week can reduce your risk of stroke.
Memory: Walking 40 minutes 3 times a week protects the brain region associated with planning and memory.
Mood- 30 minutes a day can reduce symptoms of depression
Health: Logging 3,500 steps a day lowers your risk of diabetes.
Longevity: 75 minutes a week of brisk walking can add almost 2years to your life.
Weight Loss: A daily 1-hour walk can cut your risk of obesity in half
I know a colleague who gets down from his car and walks at the sight of traffic. I think it’s the kind of discipline we should all imbibe. Our bodies are not built to sit for long hours.
So, tell me, why are you still sitting down?
I am still sitting down because I expect you to lead the way. Oya, let’s go awalking!
