Our new travel aficionados, TK and Oyinda, recently embarked on an interesting trip. The besties shared their stories with us:
Why did you both decide to travel to Abeokuta for leisure? What prompted the decision?
Atinuke: It was Oyinda’s birthday weekend and I guess the great stone city was one of our sites and sounds on our bucket list. So, It was a great opportunity to see what the rocks had in store for us. Let’s just say. It was about time we went rock-whispering….Oyin, Please add more.
Oyinda: Tinuke had a wedding and we thought it a great idea to use that opportunity to climb the rock and stay over. I had never been to Olumo Rock and it had been long since Tinuke went so sounded like a plan.
Yes, the first off our bucket list of places ?
Atinuke: This was going to be fun…All in one day we had to change outfits twice ….first the wedding, then off we went rock climbing. Actually, first the road trip, then the wedding followed by the rocks. Oh and by the way, if you ever want to connect to Abeokeuta through Epe, make sure your car papers are in order. There are like a million roadblocks.
What were you expecting to experience? And did the trip meet those expectations?
Oyinda: We were hoping to have fun and we did. It felt very touristy, cos we had a guide who explained the history of the rock and all, then the stay at a good hotel – not as great as the Transcorp hotels – gave it that holiday touch.
Abeokuta was also pleasantly neat and quaint.
Atinuke: Is it me or the city is small? Everywhere was like 5 minutes from everywhere. There were stone buildings. Little wonder it’s called the stone city. We were expecting to build a great road trip play book …which we did! We took amazing pictures.
Oyin do you remember the guy who took our pictures? He took it so professionally on my camera phone! And he was mute o!
How about that shrine of youth we visited in the rock….the one with all those old ladies? We took a picture with a lady who was 130…she didn’t look a day over 80!
Oyinda: lool
There was a shrine of youth? What does it do
Atinuke: Yes o….they say people who want to live long go there to pay homage.
Oyinda: People give them money and they pray for you. They also perform sacrifices
What were the high points of your trip?
Atinuke: Soooo many o. The highlight was when we got to the top and say the whole stone city. It was a sight to behold
Where’s your next destination?
Atinuke: We are trailing the West African slavery coast line. We start in Bonny (Nigeria) then proceed to Quidah (Benin Republic) when end up at the Cape Coast Castle (Ghana). Knowing me and my dramatic self, I am going to cry my eyes out. But I am comforted by Oyin’s presence who would give me her shoulders to wail on.
Thanks ladies!!!
