An interesting conversation prompted us to reach out to our folks across the group to learn more about what it takes to be intellectually curious.
Here are the responses below:
What do you think?
To be intellectually curious is to be a questioner of any and everything and a scavenger for information. It’s to start a Google search for “Microsoft Excel tips” and end in “Prophesies of Nostradamus”.
It is to critique why things are the way they are and be unsettled till you conclude. It’s a longing to, at any given point, have answers to the “Who?”, “What?”, “Where”, “When”, “How?” and “Why?” questions.
– Folarin Aiyegbusi, Tony Elumelu Foundation
“Intellectual curiosity is a strong and consistent desire to always understand the causes of things.
It entails moving beyond a shallow and superficial understanding of things to a deeper level where one engages, challenges and critiques with the aim of developing an independent opinion.”
– Amaka Ogbonna, Heirs Holdings
Being intellectually curious means showing a strong desire to learn. An intellectually curious person probes below the surface to learn new things.
Intellectual curiosity is a great way to stimulate the brain and has an added advantage of making one come across as interesting as you are able to contribute to almost any conversation around you.
– Onyinye Chukwugbo, Afriland Properties Plc
“When you are intellectually curious, you have a deep and persistent desire to know the “why” questions about a person, a place, a thing or a way of life in order to obtain the underlying basis concerning a particular issue”.
– Gladys Nwaeje, Afriland Properties Plc
Intellectual curiosity is a term used to describe one’s desire to invest time and energy into learning more about a person, place thing or concept.
– Monsurat Olaniyan, Afriland Properties Plc
To be intellectually curious, means to eagerly (knowingly or unknowingly) increase ones reasoning, understanding, and mental capacity. Some people are natural ‘sponges’ and are constantly absorbing knowledge formally and informally.
– Toyin Awesu, United Capital Plc
“The intellectually curious person has a deep desire to know. He is constantly trying to figure things out; constantly in search of knowledge, peeling back layers of explanation to get foundational ideas about a particular concern. It stimulates your brain, and makes you a more interesting person.”
– Mildred Onwusah, Avon HMO
“To be intellectually curious is to have a strong desire to ‘KNOW MORE’. It is a conscious ‘effort’ to learn more than others. A scholar once said, “Hear something; you know it. See something: you remember it and do something – you understand it’. This makes you stand out among your peers”
– Omitola Olajide, Avon HMO
“It means to have a persistent desire to learn more about things without giving up. When you have a hungry mind, you are always asking and seeking answers to the ‘why’ questions. Critically analysing, exploring, and evaluating issues.”
– Ayodeji Akintade, Avon HMO
“Intellectual curiosity is when one isn’t content with just being told the world is the way it is. You want to reach beyond the basic offerings of knowledge and understand the different perspectives surrounding any object of interest because you believe it makes you a better, more rounded human being.”
– Adeoye Falade, Avon HMO
