If you ‘ve never received an email from Head, Brand Management & Marketing, Heirs Holdings – Clari Green – you probably should check with IT. Clari is as passionate about her job as she is about travelling around Africa to experience the unique sight, taste and sound of our beloved continent.
I caught up with her a few days ago to steal her views on her African trips.
See more below:
What inspired your wanderlust for Africa?
I appreciate that we have many things to offer on the continent, and I got tired of going abroad all the time and so I did my first solo trip and was so impressed with the way it all went. This kick started my pledge to travel across Africa!
(At the pier in Mindelo, Cape Verde)
What countries have you been to?
Not enough to warrant this article really, lol; Benin, Togo, Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania, Gabon, Cameroon, Zambia, Cape Verde.
Morocco and Kenya were transits. I have to go back and visit, I have really slowed down on my Africa travels 🙁
(Chilling with the Masai Dudes in Zanzibar! They really are good dancers!)
(Having mixed feelings about the beautiful scenery of Goree island, Senegal)
What did you enjoy and not enjoy about each of them?
I simply loved the people and the food on all the trips. They were amazed that I was an African travelling Africa; that always tickled me because I did not understand why it was so shocking.
Gabon, Cameroon and Zambia were business trips so I didn’t really get to explore as I would have loved to, but I am sure I will go back on my own.
Tell us about the people you met that you would never forget
In Senegal, I remember Halim, an artist I met on Goree Island. He reminded me of Basquiat. I still have the piece I bought from him; it’s beautiful.
Cape Verde, I remember my friend Sheila and the hotel owner who was making advances at my boyfriend at the time (smdh).
Togo, I remember my friend’s grandmother (she passed this year) at 90 years old. She sat in her kitchen, pounded yam and made us the most amazing seafood soup I have ever had in my life.
Tanzania, I remember Hafc, a Nigerian girl I happened to bump into at a music festival. We are still good friends till this day, she has an amazing spirit and wants to save the world!
Benin, that was the trip of life! I went with some colleagues and we agreed that what happens in Benin stays in Benin!
Ghana is my most recent trip, the waiters at Coco Lounge were pretty amazing!
Enough said.
(Me and my friend Sheila in Mindelo, Cape Verde)
Tell us about one particular incident/event on one of your trips you would never forget
Dancing on the beach at night during a musical festival in Zanzibar was very liberating. Swimming with the sharks in Cape Verde was pretty cool too.
(At the Sauti za Busara music concert with Hafc in Zanzibar)
(Swiming with the sharks in Cape Verde)
What country has the most idyllic spots?
Cape Verde, though I have heard Seychelles is not too shabby too
Any mementos collected during your trip?
Lots!

Thank you Adim! it was pretty scary! Where are the pictures I shared though?
Wow, Clari, great to see this side of you. I’m a wanderlust and have been to so many countries but only 4 in Africa. I have vowed to do more travel around Africa now that I am here.
Hmmm, I should start with this long weekend.
Brb!!!
CLARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII 🙂
It would have been nice to see you touch a shark fin 😀
Really nice
Anonymous! Thank you o! I shall invest in an underwater camera…. If the sharks don’t attack me or the camera then I’ll definitely have shots of me touching the sharks fin for Part 2 of this article : )
Claritious! I just love the flow of the story. The whole thing makes Africa look so good. But Clari, I don’t like the idea of what happened in Benin remaining in Benin. Please tell us more: which colleagues did you go with? What are some of the ‘sins’ you people decided to leave in Benin? Just leak some to us.
