Nearly 600 million or seven-out-of-ten Africans do not have access to electricity. This week marks the 1st anniversary of the announcement of President Obama’s Power Africa Initiative to double access to electricity in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Power Africa aims to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity in Africa by 2018 in participating countries. The six African countries participating in the Power African Initiative includes:
- Nigeria
- Ghana
- Liberia
- Ethiopia
- Kenya
- Tanzania
Heirs Holdings is the largest private sector participant in Africa committed to generate 2000mw in made a commitment. Since we took over on 1 November 2013, our Ughelli power plant in the Niger Delta region in Nigeria has generated 400 megawatts of electricity.
